Syndone--"Inca" (Vinyl Magic--1993) Another production from Beppe Crovella, this
is Syndone's second album..."Spleen" being the first. I like this one much
better, as Empire keyboardist Edo Rogani joins the band, and along with
Syndone's resident keyboardist Nik Comoglio, gives them a hefty dual keyboard
attack. This album has a much more updated, polished sound than CAP, but still
manages to retain a classic 70's Italian feel with vintage keys, bass, and drums
format. At times sounding a bit like ELP, less classical, but a little jazzier,
the album offers a good balance between vocal and instrumental intensity on it's
10 tracks. Both Rogani and Comoglio take turns impressing the listener with a
wide variety of playing styles on piano, Hammonds, Moog, and other synths. In
fact, the booklet comes with a whole page dedicated to listing the keyboardist's
solo sequences song by song. A nice touch. There's really very little to
complain about here, perhaps the compositions could have been a bit more
complex, and Comoglio's vocals sometimes come across as excessively bombastic.
But I'm just nitpicking....as it's a very solid keyboard-oriented release.
